Pattern
R1: MR, ch 3 (counts as dc), make 11 dc into MR. Join with sl st to top of ch-3. [total 12 sts]
R2: Ch 3 (counts as dc).
3-dc-inc in next 2 sts,
dc in next 3 sts,
3-dc-inc in next 3 sts,
dc in next 3 sts.
In last stitch: 2-dc-inc (together with beginning ch-3 counts as 3-dc-inc).
Join with sl st to top of ch-3. [total 24 sts]
Place a stitch marker in the middle stitch of every 3-dc-inc. This will make the next round easier to work.
R3: Ch 3 (counts as dc). Dc in each st. In the center stitch of each 3-dc-inc, or the stitch with your marker, work dc-hdc-dc.
The half double crochet in the middle helps create a smoother curve so the shape doesn’t become too sharp. [total 36 sts]
Again, place a stitch marker in the middle stitch of every dc-hdc-dc.
R4: Ch 3 (counts as dc). Dc in each dc, except in the center stitch of each (dc-hdc-dc), or the stitch with your marker, work (dc-hdc-dc). [total 48 sts]
Ears Pattern
Sl st in next 5 sts.
In next 6 sts: (sc), (sc-hdc), (dc-tr), ch2, sl st on the back bump of 2nd ch from hook, (tr-dc), (hdc-sc), (sc)
Sl st in next 7 sts.
Repeat ear pattern in next 6 sts.
Sl st around to beginning and finish with an invisible join.
Finishing
Cut two 1 × 1 cm black felt circles for the eyes and a small “w”-shaped piece for the nose and mouth. Sew or glue them onto the coaster/applique.
